Official figures released yesterday (Thursday, January 3) by the Health and Safety Authority show that there was a 13 per cent reduction in the number of workplace deaths during 2012. There were 47 people killed in workplace accidents last year compared to 54 in 2011 with just one occurring in County Mayo.

The New Year will see changes to the State driving licence which will see new licences issued as a plastic, credit card sized, document from January 12 2013.

From January 2013, anyone who applies for a first learner permit or is renewing his/her driving licence will receive a modern, plastic, credit-card sized version. The new licence will be in a format that is standardised and recognisable throughout the EU and is one of the changes being introduced in Ireland as part of a new EU directive.
